Welcome to the Postgraduate Institute of ACBT

The Postgraduate Institute of ACBT is an extension of scholastic studies of the Australian College of Business and Technology. Inaugurated in 1998, ACBT is today highly acclaimed as Sri Lanka"s finest Australiaars ago at the Perth Institute of Business and Technology. The network has expanded throughout Australia as well as to a number of overseas countries. Each Institute is attached to a reputable and internationally recognized university.

Since its establishment ACBT has been closely affiliated with Edith Cowan University. Currently ACBT teaches both Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Science (Information technology) degrees of Edith Cowan University.

Introduction to ECU
 

Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Perth, Western Australia is a modern educational institution noted for its vigorous and innovative course content, specialized research and creative pursuits.

Named in honor of Edith Dircksey Cowan, the first Woman elected to an Australian parliament in 1912, ECU is a responsive and forward-thinking institution and an Australian leader in the provision of professionally focused degree programs.

As the modern descendant of the first higher educational institution in Western Australia, ECU upholds a well-deserved reputation for teaching excellence that dates back to the beginning of the twentieth century. One of the larger universities in Australia, with 24000 students. MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

Course Structure

1. Management of Information


This unit introduces basic principles to help managers make fundamental decisions involving the use of information systems, that is, when, where and how to apply them. Areas covered include the role of management in Information Systems (IS) technology, using IS/ Information Technology (IT) for strategic advantage, taking an active role in IS development and managing IS resources. Using leading edge thinking and practice in information and knowledge management, we focus on managing individuals, terms and organizations alongside information and technology for effective and efficient business and administration. The course assumes no prior study of the separate disciplines of information systems or information technology although certain elements of each are incorporated, especially using the Internet.

2. Market Analysis

This unit introduces participants to the principles of marketing. This includes a study of the marketing concept, consumer behavior, marketing research, marketing segmentation, marketing mix strategies and selected applications. The unit also considers management of the marketing process and explores global marketing concepts.

3. Financial Reporting and Analysis

This unit introduces the fundamental principles of financial and management accounting and covers the basic concepts of accounting and financial statement analysis, together with the uses of management accounting in planning, control and decision making. While the focus is primarily on Australian accounting practice, the accounting issues considered in the unit may be relevant to other contexts. It is nevertheless necessary to establish relevance prior to undertaking an inter company comparison. Ethics also form an integral part of the unit. The unit highlights effective use of financial resources as key element in successful management and explores some of the tools that are available through the financial system of a business organization.

4. Principles of Management

An introduction to management and the nature of managerial work. Discussion of the roles and characteristics of managerial work; the environment, structure and culture of organizations. The course includes the development of major theories as well as current managerial practice: ways of understanding management, approaches to learning about management; the nature of managerial work; environment and structure of organizations; the manager"s roles and activities.

5. Economics

The aim of the unit is for students to develop a grasp of economic theory and it"s applications to business management. This unit enables students to master selected aspects of economic theory and their application to business management. The unit follows a "constructivist" approach to student learning through a student - centered program of study. Students select a real world enterprise or organization that they study in depth. Each student will construct a scenario for the business they have selected and develop a 4-year competitive strategy using the tools of economic analysis acquired in unit studies.

6. Management of Organizations

The nature of theory; the meaning and purpose of theory and its role in organization analysis. An overview of mainstream organizational theory; classical theory; bureaucracy; systems and contingency theory; population ecology and resource dependency theory. Alternative perspective on organizations; action frame of reference. Phenomenology, dialectic approaches and organizations as cultures, power arenas and cultures.


7. Principles of Human Resource Management

This unit analyses the development of personnel management into human resource management and evaluates alternative strategic human resource management paradigms together with the increasing integration of human resource management and industrial relations. IT analyses the functional processes of planning for recruiting, selecting, training, developing, rewarding and retraining people at work. It explores current themes such as labour market decentralization, deregulation and flexibility, managing diversity, occupational health and safety, and international human resource management.

8. Business Strategy

Strategic management is concerned with analysis, choice and implementation of strategies. Analysis involves a careful collection, examination and diagnosis of relevant facts appropriate to the correct identification of alternatives. Choice is explored as the complex process concerning key stakeholders both within and outside The organization, involving reconciliation of conflicting objectives.
Implementation is approached as the translation of strategic thinking into reality. This unit deals with these issues in some depth but it also concerned with decision making process by which strategy/policy is developed. This unit distinguishes itself by not only covering the traditional strategic management aspects but also highlights the limitations of conventional wisdom. Significant attention is also paid to aspects of managing change and how it operates in a dynamic environment.


9. Cultural Framework of Business

This unit will examine culture and its impact on communication, apply intercultural communication skills to specific business tasks, and will look at the implications for firms and individuals doing business in multicultural and cross-cultural environments.

10. International Business

The major objective of this unit is to help students think internationally. It provides an introduction to the major social, political and economic challenges facing international business in the 21st century. The unit will look at the internationalization of markets; Australia"s position in the market place; and develop a strategic approach for entering the international business arena.


11. International Marketing

The unit examines the nature and practice of international marketing and includes an introduction to economic, political and legal dimensions.

12. Principles of Finance

An introduction to the essentials of managerial finance; the fundamentals of financial mathematics; the analysis of capital budgeting techniques to evaluate capital expenditure; the role of cost of capital in the investment decision; measurement of the firm"s cost of capital; the principles and use of portfolio theory and the Capital Asset Pricing Model; the Efficient Market Hypothesis; the dividend policy; the management of working capital; the institutions and structure of Australian financial market; the identification and evaluating of various sources of finance; basic issues in mergers and takeovers.



Conditions of Enrolment


Fees

.
All fees, charges and accounts will be payable in advance as determined by the Institute.
.
Fees are correct as of July 2006. The institution reserves the right to vary its fees at any time.
.
Where a student studies less than a full semester load, the student will pay the current per unit fee for each unit undertaken.

Refund Policy

.
A course is defined as one semester of study in any program of ACBT.
.
Notification of cancellation / withdrawal from unit/s of deferral from a course must be made in writing to ACBT .
.
In the event of cancellation / withdrawal from a course before the commencement date, the course fee will be refunded minus Rs 10,000.
. There will be no refund of course fees after the course commencement date.
.
The institute reserves the right not to offer a course previously made available at its own discretion. Where a student is unable to enroll in a similar course at the Institute and the enrollment is cancelled, then all fees paid will be refunded.


Other conditions

.
The students are expected to attend all classes and undertake all tests and examinations during a course and abide by all the rules and regulations of the Institute that are enforced at any time.
.
The Institute may by written notice vary such conditions of enrolment as may be necessary to comply with any law, regulation or amendment thereof of the Republic of Sri Lanka or the Common wealth of Australia.
. ACBT may vary the structure of the course as required by Edith Cowan University.

How to enroll
. Complete the application form.
.
Attach certificate copies of all academic qualifications, including school reports and official examination certificates, passport/ID card Please ensure your present name is added to copies of qualifications obtained under a former name. Copies can be verified by the Institute on seeing the originals or by a lawyer. Attach passport size photographs.
.
Submit your application and documents with the application fee to ACBT or to one of our representative offices.
.
If your application is successful, you will be given a Letter of Offer explaining the course you have been offered, the fees payable, the orientation and course commencement dates.
.
To accept the Letter of Offer and to confirm your enrolment, it is necessary to pay the tuition fee due. Payment should be made directly to the ACBT account at HSBC. Please include your full name on the bank deposit slip, and hand over a copy of the receipt for our record purposes.

Entry Requirements

» A student may be admitted to the MBA(International) programme where the students, in the opinion of the academic services committee of ECU, has:

* Been awarded a relevent degree or has an equivalent qualification

Or

*A minimum of 5 years work experience with at least 2 years in a managerial capacity

Requirements for Continuation in the MBA (I) program

Student must must maintain a course average of 60% or more over the first four subjects of the  course

Student do not achieve this will average will be awarded the Graduate Certificate in Business Adminstration if four units are completed.

A course average of  60% or more is required over 8 subjects to continue to the last four units.

Students who do not achieve this average will be awarded the Graduate Diploma in Business Adminstration if  8 units are completed.

English Language Proficency Requirement

All students must meet an English literacy requirement by

* Obtaining a 6.5 IELTS score

Or

*Showing evidence of post secondary academic studies in English

If the student wishes to graduate in Australia with ECU graduates there will be an additional charge of Rs 98,000 (including of Return air ticket, visa guidance & participation in graduation ceremony in Australia)
